Drinking Soda Is Like Drinking Battery Acid?

I have never really been a soda drinker myself I have to say….

I always thought it was the bubbles that made my throat close up when it hit the back of my mouth. Whatever the case, rejected!

I know many people though, who would religiously or addictively….down their can of soda after lunch…every day….day in day out…

But could it really be like drinking acid?

Here are some quick facts to help us understand this:

#1: The pH of tap water is around 6.75. The pH of pure water is 7.

#2: Your body tries to keep the pH of your blood within the range of 7.35 to 7.45.

#3: The pH of the soda drink ‘7-Up’ is around 3.2 which makes it an acid. Coca-Cola has a pH of around 2.5. Given that pH is a log scale, this makes soda around 10,000 more acidic than tap water!

#4: Demineralization, or loss of tooth enamel, begins at around an acidity level of 5.5 pH.

Now rewind to the 1950’s and take a look at this advertisement from 7Up…

“This young man is 11 months old – and he isn’t our youngest customer by any means. For 7-Up is so pure, so wholesome, you can even give it to babies and feel good about it. Look at the back of a 7-Up bottle. Notice that all our ingredients are listed. (That isn’t required of soft drinks, you know – but we’re proud to do it and we think you’re pleased that we do.)”

“By the way, Mom, when it comes to toddlers – if they like to be coaxed to drink their milk, try this: Add 7-Up to the milk in equal parts, pouring the 7-Up gently into the milk. It’s a wholesome combination – and it works! Make 7-Up your family drink. You like it…it likes you!”

“Nothing does it like Seven-Up!”

Are We Being Taken For a Ride?

These days it’s hard to even comprehend how they got away with feeding us such misinformation.

However, back in the 1950s:

  • Smoking was being endorsed by doctors;
  • Apparently radium made a great ingredient for a facial cream; and
  • You could get skinny by ingesting sanitized tape worms!

Doesn’t it make you wonder what the new ‘thing’ is that we are being told is safe and even ‘healthy’ for us and our family?

And don’t think that there isn’t something new to worry about!

Every year, the list of new and emerging contaminants of concern gets longer…

As a rough global average, one new chemical being synthesized every 27 seconds. Many of these chemicals will never make it into the chemical economy. But of the ones that do, there are many that won’t even make it through to testing for human health safety before they are dished out in medications and personal-care products etc.

That is the sad and sobering truth…

Today I can see that little is known about:

  • The human health effects of certain ingredients in pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs);
  • Electromagnetic radiation from the ever increasing product line of wireless electronic devices for your home;
  • The list goes on…

New research is showing that many sunscreens (High-SPF ones in particular) and personal care products contain aluminum oxide nanoparticles which are more dangerous than larger-sized aluminum particles. This ‘nanoalumina’ can accumulate in your pineal gland (see pic) and destroy your mitochondria (your body’s energy powerhouse) and cause damage to your brain [1][2].

A study published in an Environmental and Occupation Health journal is also calling for the renaming of the ‘Laptop’, so that it doesn’t encourage people to actually use it on their laps!  They measured the magnetic flux that is generated and found that it could be detrimental to you and your unborn baby’s health [3].

And do you remember when the World Health Organization recently came out and cautioned people from eating preserved meats in the deli section of the supermarket, because they contain carcinogenic (cancer causing) chemicals? Preserved meats are now classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, just like tobacco cigarettes and asbestos![4]

If ONLY we could look into the future and see what we are currently exposing ourselves to that we probably shouldn’t be….

Or maybe we should be taking a precautionary approach right now.

Being curious and learning a little bit more about what we are putting on and in our bodies is key. This will also help us to reconnect with our own intuition.

Let’s get back to soda for the moment…

Getting High on Soda and the Acidic Aftermath…

Now that we know that sodas (like Coke and 7-Up) are actually an acid, what effect does this have on your body?

Let’s take a closer look at the re-vamped 7-Up ingredients:

  • High fructose corn syrup (HFCS)
  • Carbonated water
  • Citric acid
  • Unspecified “natural flavors”
  • Potassium citrate

Prior to this, it really was a mind-altering substance!

Just like Coca-Cola, it started as a pharmaceutical elixir. When it was released in 1929, it went by the less-catchy name “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda” – and it was packed with mood-enhancing lithium. In the 1940s, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of lithium in beer and soft drinks.

Amazingly, in the early 2000’s an ad campaign began that promoted the soda as being “All Natural”, with pictures of cans of 7-Up being picked from fruit trees.

It didn’t last long, because unfortunately you can’t escape the fact that HFCS is artificial. It is not the same as consuming natural cane or fruit sugars.

There are many research papers now warning of the detrimental health effects of consuming high levels of HFCS, with the reported effects including [5]:

  • Insulin resistance
  • Impaired glucose tolerance
  • High insulin levels
  • High triglycerides
  • Hypertension

HFCS is commonly used as a sweetener and preservative. It has been increasingly replacing real sugar since the 1970s.

And do not mistake HFCS for sugars from real fruit!

Pick up any box or bottle at the supermarket and the chances are it contains HFCS 🙁

Some health practitioners, including Mark Hyman (MD), have even been referring to it as poison.

Artificial sweeteners (such aspartame, saccharin and sucralose) that are put into ‘Diet Soda’ have also been identified as highly toxic to your body.

Susan Swithers (PhD), a Professor of psychological sciences and a Behavioral Neuroscientist at Purdue, has said that public health officials should tell people to avoid diet soda much like they do with regular, sugar-sweetened soda because they can cause “metabolic derangements” [6].

So what is it that makes soda so acidic?

The citric acid and phosphoric acids are likely to be the main culprits, along with the fact that they are carbonated drinks.

Our kidneys can’t excrete urine with a pH of lower than 5. [7]

We have to buffer the acidity and of all the foods we eat; fruits and vegetables have the greatest buffering capacity. If we overload our kidneys with acidic foods and drinks and don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables, our body then begins to take calcium from our bones to buffer the acidity. [7] Not good!

To maintain or restore your health, it is widely accepted now that you should be eating 80% alkaline and 20% acid forming foods. Some refer to this as the ‘alkaline diet’. And if you are eating 90% or more alkaline foods then you can expect ‘vibrant’ health.

The modern-day diet, generally being:

  • Low in fiber
  • Rich in saturated fats 
  • Excessive proteins (e.g. meat and fish)
  • Refined sugars and salt (sodium and chloride)

…puts a high acid load on your body and disrupts the digestive process.

On top of this, as you get older, your body’s ability to regulate acids decreases (i.e. you renal acid-base regulatory function decreases) [8].

So as you age, you are much more likely to experience metabolic acidosis. This occurs when the chemical balance of acids and bases in your blood gets thrown off.

It is also the precursor to inflammation and disease. Think osteoporosis, weak muscles, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and a whole host of other problems…

Keeping Things Simple and Slightly Alkaline…

The key to seeing a rapid improvement in your health, preventing disease and slowing the ageing process….is intimately related to the acid/ alkaline balance (pH) of the fluids in our bodies.

Simple but powerful…

The pH of your urine varies based upon the need for balancing your internal environment.

In areas of our body where we need to digest food and protect ourselves against pathogens, there is a protective lining that is acidic. Think your skin (pH 4–6.5), your stomach (pH of 1.35 to 3.5) and the vagina (pH of less than 4.7) [4].

However, the pH of your blood is slightly alkaline and must be tightly regulated for cellular processes to function properly – see Fact #3 at the top of the article.

The optimal pH of your lymphatic fluid, which is a lipid based system that takes wastes away from your cells, is also around 7.4, so slightly alkaline.

[Note: Lymph fluid is like the water that takes the waste away from your toilet to sewer AND you have more of this in your body than blood!]

Our bodies are composed of around 60-70% water (having a neutral pH – see Fact #2). So maintaining an overall alkaline food intake will help your body regulate the pH of its blood and lymph fluid. This is especially important as we age, because we need a helping hand to reduce the acidic load on our body.

All foods contain both acid-forming and alkaline-forming elements.

Foods such as fruit and vegetables are alkali-rich. Whereas foods such as meat, fish, dairy, coffee, grains and soda drinks are alkali-poor with a relatively high acid load. [7]

Guess which foods I’ve been eating more of?

In fact, I have chosen to go totally plant-based to give my organs the vacation they so desperately need.

The Wrap…

The pH of battery acid is around zero to one. In fact it is so acidic that it would eat away at your skin.

So you can’t quite get away with saying that the acidity of soda drinks (pH ~2.5-3.2) and battery acid are directly comparable…

However, soda drinks ARE AN ACID. They are around 10,000 times more acidic than water and have little to no nutritional value. Also, the High Fructose Corn Syrup in soda drinks (an artificial sweetener and preservative) can devastate your health if consumed on a regular basis.

If soda was your main way of staying hydrated, then it wouldn’t be long until you felt the very real effects of metabolic acidosis on your body. This would then put your body at risk of developing every known degenerative disease…

Unfortunately doctors are observing the health effects of over-consumption of soda all over the world. Not only in the poorer countries, but in the well-educated more affluent areas too.

Knowledge is PowerThe advertisements would have you believe that if you just drank one can of this amazing drink every day, then you will be healthier, happier, more productive and may even grow wings!

Is there any wonder that diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity are out of control and costing the Health Care system billions of dollars (and increasing) every year?

At least we have progressed far enough in our knowledge to at least recognize that giving your baby soda in its milk, is probably not such a great idea….

But what are we being ‘sold’ on now that we might look back on in 10 years’ time and say I really did that?

Preserved meats in the deli section of your supermarket have been outed by the World health Organization as Class 1 carcinogens!

Awareness about the health effects of nanoalumina in many High-SPF sunscreens is also on the rise. As is the detrimental effects of electromagnetic radiation in an increasingly wireless and electronically connected world.

Do we really need to be the guinea pigs? Or should a product only be allowed to hit the shelves once all of its ingredients have been scientifically tested as safe for human use?

Hmmm….

As the saying goes:

“Knowledge is Power” 

And if you mess around with natures intelligence you are really just placing yourself in one grand experiment.
